Club of the week - February 19
Deer Lake Figure Skating Club
Skating out of the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex, the Deer Lake Figure Skating Club (DLFSC), has nearly 80 members for the 2008/2009 skating season.
Our season started in early October and it has already been very busy and successful. At the Western Regionals, 11 out of our 16 entries earned medals. This includes 4 Gold, 5 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. At this time, we are preparing for our interclub competition "Winterfest" being held in Stephenville, February 20 and 21. In all, our club will have 41 entries at the competition. The skaters are very excited and looking forward to this fun competition. This is a great time for all skaters, especially our pre-juniors. We have a lot of young upcoming skaters in our club and we look forward to an exciting future for them.
So far this year we have had many skaters pass Skate Canada tests and a number of skaters named to the PEP (Provincial Enrichment Program) team for 2008/2009 and the junior team. Our skaters are working really hard and it is showing in their accomplishments. We are so proud.
The DLFSC has two skaters who are trying for the STARSkate Nationals. The girls are working very hard on their 3 programs and are looking forward to the Provincials this year. The DLFCS coaching staff consists of Sarah Battcock (Club Coach), Mandi Coish (Coach), Lori Chynn (Coach) and Jillian Young (Canskate/Pre-junior coach). They work with our skaters Sunday mornings, Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings for a total of 8.5 hours per week.
This year, Skate Canada's Canskate program is celebrating 25 years. The DLFSC has nearly 60 Canskaters this year. We are in the early stages of planning something to celebrate the longevity of this program.
The DLFSC has a new executive this year as well. Our new president is Angie Parsons and our vice-president is Paula Humphrey. There are also other volunteers on our executive looking after things such as finances, testing, ice time, secretarial, membership, competitions, can-skate, publicity, website, ice show, communications and, of course, fundraising.
Our volunteers are already in the planning stages of this year's Ice Show. The theme for the ice show is "Mama Mia". The Ice Show takes place on April 1, 2009 at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex in Deer Lake. Our skaters will be skating to the music from the hit Broadway play and blockbuster movie. Last year the club put off an amazing performance of "High School Musical" just one week after our last competition. With all the extra time to plan and prepare, we should have a spectacular evening of skating entertainment this year. Hope to see you all there.
The biggest news for the year is that the DLFSC have changed the club colour from burgundy to red. With this change we ordered new club jackets (red with black embroidery). In all over 30 jackets were purchased. We plan to show off the new jackets this weekend in Stephenville. As you can see from the photo, we now need to change the colour of our banner as well.
