2003 EASTERN REGIONAL Latest News
Some pictures of the closing cermonies and medals up now - afraid we didn't get every team. There's still a few more pictures to go through but it's getting a bit late; check back tomorrow and I'll see what I can do. Note that the web pitcures are reduced in size and quality; I may be able to e-mail people higher resoltion versions. Just let me know which photo you are interested in!
We're down to the closing ceremonies and medal presentations now, so I'm signing off from the stadium. We've got a pile of photos to upload, and I hope to get most of those up tonight, so check back later!
A great programe by Elite Rive Sud, fast, powerful precise. It's a long way to come to skate as a single entry in the category, but it was a treat for the crowd to see such high quality skating. Every young synchro skater in the crowd was watching intently - thanks for making the trip!
And so we move towards the end of a long day. The adults are on the ice, Insync just skated, and Sharp Edges are waiting to get on. We're looking forward to seeing Elite Rive Sud Open team skate their long programme. The marks are in for adult and Sharp Edges have held on for the gold, with another good skate.
5:35: sorry for the break in coverage- had to get a cup of tea and share in the excitment of my daughter's team's bronze (apologies for a Princelles bias). The Junior event is looking very close indeed; the Silver Shadows team had an excellent skate and took advantage of slightly less than perfect skates from the Starlites and Illusion to move into contention. This one will definitely be left for the computer accountant, but I'm guessing the Starlites might just hang on to first place. And indeed they have; with Silver Shadows moving ahead of Illusion for the silver.
4:25: we're watching the last team in novice to skate - Elite Rive Sud just had a great skate and have a clear lead over the Princelles in 2nd. Les Chatelaines again are excellent and it looks like Elite Rive Sud gold, Les Chatlelaines silver and the Princelles 3rd. The digital camera has run out of batteries so we're saving our last set for the medals- photos will be updated tonight!
Now the novice return for their 2nd skate - worth 2/3 of the total. After three teams, I'd say they've all skated better than this morning. There's open marking but so far there's no clear leader. CBN skated 4th and give anotrher good performance - they seem to be leading so far, and now there's a flood before the next flight.
More photos now up - we'd appreciate any feedback on our live coverage- mail the webmaster with your comments!
Some great skates in juvenile, with the Silver Sensations from Corner Brook perhaps the best but we'll wait for the judges... My reading of the marks has the sensational Sensations 1st, Les Eclairs 2nd and too close to call for 3rd... Now we have official results, and indeed it is the Sensations gold, Les Eclairs silver and the Wolfville Kickers bronze!
Stephenville skate first, wearing some attractive oufits patterned on the Newfoundland flag and skating to rousing traditional music. They are followed by what looks like a very young team from Corner Brook who are definitely cute as well as talented (although it would be fair to say that cute fits describes all the teams in this category). The Princelles livened up the crowd, skating to Shrek, and despite a minor fall had a strong programme. We have open marking here, and right now it looks as though they are ranked first. CBN followed with another very young team and had a minor fall but otherwise skated well. It's the Princettes gold, the Silhouettes silver and the Silver Stars third.
Almost ready for the afternoon session now, starting with Pre Juvenile, then open, then the Juveniles, followed by the 2nd skates in adult, novice and Junior. The Wolfville teams making a lot of noise, working hard for that most spirited team award. Stephenville also loud and sitting right by them so quite a crowd!
Skating order for the 2nd Junior skate now up, plus more photos.
Time for the 2 hour lunch break now - and the Junior results are in, with the Starlites in first, Illusion 2nd, and Silver Shadows 3rd.
Some photos from opening cermonies now on line, as is the skating order for the Novice 2nsd skate. The Starlites are skating right now, 7th in Junior.
11:20: OK the marks are in for novice, elite rive Sud in the lead, Les Chatelaines 2nd and local favourites the Princelles 3rd- but a very close competition. We can't post the ordinals until later but when we do you'll see that this is a very well contested event. The juniors are on the ice now.
10 am: Les Chatelaines get things under way in Novice with a fast clean programme - no open marking in this so we'll wait for the results after the teams have skated. Up in the accountants area we've lost power so hopefully we can stay live for a bit longer - and without power the computer accountants a bit stuck... The Icicles up now, and a good skate to Grease, a big crowd favourite, and they will be pleased with that. Stephenville have now skated, a lively routine, and now the Princelles, not quite a clean programme with one minor fall, but with a lot of energy. We now have an extension cord for the accountant's computers so marks will be forthcoming. The second flight was well skated. Elite Rive Sud could only bring 12 skaters but were highly impressive. The Ice Caps had a spirited clean performance to music that had the crowd's toes tapping. The Novice Starlites skated well recovering quickly from a couple of falls. The Wolfville Strikers finished the category off with an excellent performance. And now we wait for the marks...
9:50: opening ceremonies went ahead without a hitch, lovely rendition of Oh Canada by Amanda Vallis, diginitaries led out on the ice by 3 Newfoundland dogs. The ice is being resurfaced, and the novice competition should be underway soon.
8:50: The adults take the ice, with Sharp Edges first to skate with some good support from other Mount Pearl teams in the stands. A nice programme again - some good skating today. No open marking for this, so we'll wait for the official results. The stadium is filling up and there's lots of support for InSync, from the Prince of Wales section but also notably Stephenville. Another good skate, well done everyone... Next come class act, classy in black, seems to be the trend today... Unfortunately the only ones in their category but have an excellent skate and take the gold! now a break for opening ceremonies.
It's 8:20 am at Mile One, and only a small crowd on hand to watch the Pre Novice teams compete. The Silver Breakers skate first now wearing black dresses with gold trim... A full team of 16 with a spare, they skate a nice clean programme with marks from 2.1 to 2.2 for both composition and presentation. The Auroras are next to skate - again wearing black with bright orange trim, 15 skaters. They skate a strong, sophisticated programme, with excellent speed, and no obvious problems (to this observer anyway). They recieve good marks, in the 2.4-2.5 range. Last to skate are Loop Lightning, from Wesleyville, breaking the trend in dark purple dresses, again fielding a full team of 16 with a spare - great to see such a strong team from a small community. They again skate a clean programme- a well skated event this. It looks like a judging split, with two judges having them third, but the other five placing them second. It's the Auroras gold, the Loops silver, and Silver Breakers bronze.
Following the Pre Novice, the two adult teams will have their first skate, and then the solitary Masters entry will skate before the opening ceremonies.
Feb 14: A full day of practice, which ran to schedule in a highly efficient manner. Unfortunately some teams were unable to make practice times, so we missed seeing the St Pierre teams, and some others. Everybody is now safely in, including the Corner Brook teams who seemed in high spirits despite the bus leaving at 6 am this morning!. Our test set-up at the stadium worked well and we hope to be able to bring you results as they are posted from our perch high above the rink with the accountants. We'd appreciate any feedback on our live coverage- mail the webmaster with your comments!
You can find a few pictures of practice in the photos section. Starting orders are posted on-line under the results section.
Feb 13: The teams are starting to arrive in St. John's. The first out of province teams to arrive were those from Wolfville, this afternoon. The junior team were spotted watching the Prince of Wales novice team practice at Mile One this afternoon, and gave them a nice round of applause for a clean run through of their programme!
Feb 7: The final schedule is now on line
Feb 7: we now have pictures of nearly all the teams and updated profiles on the teams page.
