Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador mourns the passing of James “Andy” Joy.

Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador mourns the passing of Andy Joy, a long-time member of the Newfoundland and Labrador skating family who passed away on January 1,2017. Andy served the sport he loved as Chairperson of Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador (1983-1985) along with various other provincial board positions and as a dedicated Judge and Professional Coach

Andy and partner Carolyn Gosse were medallists at the inaugural Canada Winter Games held in 1967 in Quebec City. He was also the 1967 Atlantic Canada Novice Men’s Silver medallist . At the 1971 Canada Winter Games Andy once again represented NL as a Canada Games Team Member in Saskatoon and was the Newfoundland and Labrador Team Manager at the 1979 Canada Winter Games in Brandon, Manitoba.

Andy appreciated the abilities of those skaters who could combine artistry with athleticism and the prestigious Andy Joy Cup was presented to the skater competing at the Western Regional Championships who displayed the highest degree of artistry in the opinion of the Judges.

The skating family is saddened by Andy’s passing. He was a very good friend to all.

We extend our deepest condolences to Andy’s family and friends.
