Starlites win gold at Atlantic Regional Synchro!

Starlites- golden at Atlantics

Congratulations to the Juvenile Starlites (Mount Pearl SC) who won their category at the Atlantic Regional Synchronized Skating Championships, beating 5 other teams for the gold. Their score of 22.22 is a provincial record. The Starlites are Jennifer Bent, Shawna Brodhagen, Kayla Burden, Lauren Coombs, Megan Coombs, Kirklyn Edison, Kelsey Hynes, Emily McIlroy, Krysta Quinn, Briet Sevard, Renee Skinner, Makenzie Woodford, and Grace Woodland (Coach Kevin Walsh). Synergy (Prince of Wales SC) had a good skate as single entrants in Intermediate, scoring 67.53. Synergy have qualified for Nationals in Brampton Ontario in March. Synergy are Allie Winter, Jennifer Noel, Beth Liverman, Megan Burt, Siobhan Wilkins, Hayley Porter, Jenna Hillyard, Clara Pollard, Nicole Burt, Kayla Kennedy, Samantha Phelan, Lana McCaw, Valerie Ball, Stephanie Nevin, Tiffany Whynot and Carly Austin (coach Shirley Thistle).
Allison Drover (Technical Specialist), Suzanne Goodland (Judge) and Angela Clarke (Judge) officiated at the event.

Canada Games coaching staff announced

Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to announce the coaching staff for figure skating at the Canada Winter Games. Wendy Mercer has been appointed as the female coach, Lisa Young as the Special Olympics coach, and Neal Thorne as the male coach. Betty Brett will be the team manager. The games are being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia February 11-27 2011.

Joey Russell 11th at Four Continents in Korea

Joey Russell competed in the ISU Four Continents competition in Korea, finishing 11th overall in a strong international field.  This international event features skaters from the Americas, Asia, Australasia and Africa. Joey placed 12th in the short programme, scoring 57.05, and 10th in the free skate (114.39) with a total of  171.44. Congratulations to former section member Allie Hann-McCurdy and her partner Michael Coreno on their silver medal in ice-dance. Allie was a Canskater with Prince of Wales SC before moving to BC.

Jasmine Penney - "Andy Joy Cup" most artistic performance

The Western Regional Skating competition took place this weekend (January 22 – 23, 2010), hosted by Silver Blades Skating Club  at the Pepsi Centre, Corner Brook. Silver Blades won the Club Award, the Joan Targett Award went to Marta Croll-Baehre and the Andy Joy Cup to Jasmine Penney

Eastern Regionals

Eastern Regionals took place in Clarenville this weekend (January 23-24), hosted by Flying Blades. Brianna Seaward was named most artistic skater, with the Hart award going to Katie Cranford. Most points went to CBN, with Cutting Edge the most improved club.

Silver for Alex and Matthew at Junior Nationals; Joey 5th

At the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in London Ontario. Skate Newfoundland and Labrador was represented by Joey Russell in Senior Men. Joey skated a brilliant short programme on Friday scoring 74.04 to place 3rd, landing a clean triple axel. He placed 5th overall after scoring 128.12 in the long for a provincial record total of 202.16.

At the BMO Junior Nationals Alex and Matthew Young won silver in novice pairs with a personal best score of 63.92 in the long programme (102.68 overall, only just short of the winner’s score of 102.87).  They were in first place after the short programme with a score of 38.76. Alex and Matthew’s long programme can now be seen on Skatebuzz TV!

Central Regionals

Central Regionals were held in Botwood, hosted by Seaport Skaters FSC. Cecily Parsons of Terra Nova Tornadoes won the most artistic award, with Sparkling Blades capturing the most points trophy, and Island Blades the most improved club award.

Labrador Regionals

The 2010 Labrador Regional’s were held this past weekend (January 15 & 16th, 2010) at the E. J. Broomfield Memorial Arena in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, hosted by Snowflake FSC. Emma Byrne (Polaris FSC) was named most artistic skater, with Snowflake capturing most points award, and Wabush most improved.

Youngs featured in Western Star

The final numbers were 102.87 to 102.68. That’s how agonizingly close Corner Brook’s Matthew and Alexandra Young were to winning a gold medal in the novice division of the BMO Junior Nationals in London, Ont. on Wednesday. Neither of the Silver Blades skaters were too down about the near miss — as far as they’re concerned, this was the best program they’ve ever skated and it was only worth celebrating, not second-guessing. “It was our top score ever,” said Matthew. “When we started we just wanted to skate two personal bests and just try to improve from our last competition.”

Joey Russell featured in Telegram

“At this weekend’s BMO Canadian figure skating championships in London, Ont., Russell will have a look to become the first person from this province to make Canada’s Olympic figure skating team.”After finishing last year, the goal of being at the Olympics became a little more realistic,” Russell said from Barrie, Ont,. where he continues to train out of the Mariposa Skating School under the tutelage of Lee Barkell and Doug Leigh. “I’ve had it in my mind ever since I finished my long routine last year at nationals and with each competition and each day of practice, I’m realizing it’s a big possibility. It’s pushing me that much harder each day.”

Kaitlyn Dawe- Balisch Cup; most artistic award

Avalon regionals took place January 9 to 10 at the NE Avalon arena, Torbay, hosted by Prince of Wales SC. The most points trophy went to Mount Pearl SC and a brand new trophy presented by Barbara Predham for most improved club went to Bell Island FSC. The mini-Ballisch Cup for most artistic skater was presented to Kaitlyn Dawe of CBS. A list of former award winners can be found here.

Provincial qualifiers from regional competition

The technical package states that generally the top three placements in a category qualify for the Provincial Championships but “if combined entries from all regional competitions are 15 or less for any single category, then all entries qualify for provincials.” Based on regional entries as of January 8, this provision will apply to the following categories

  • Senior Bronze women 12 and under
  • Senior Bronze women 13 & 14 a
  • Senior Bronze women 15 and over
  • Introductory Interpretive 11 and under
  • Introductory Interpretive 12 and over –
  • Bronze Skills

Other categories qualify by the normal procedure.
