Coaches selected for CanSkate Coach University Program

Congratulations to Jennifer Osmond of Prince of Wales Sc, and Mark Scott of Silver Blades SC who as two of ten coaches across Canada, will attend the the 2013 CanSkate Coach University Program (CSCUP). This two-day intensive training program, which will take place from June 4-5, 2013 and runs in conjunction with Skate Canada’s 2013 National Coaches’ Conference (NCC), and Annual Convention and General Meeting (ACGM) taking place in Ottawa, Ontario.

National Coach Apprenticeship Program

Coaches Neal Thorne, Kevin Walsh along with Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Executive Director Lori Brett participated in the Skate Canada National Coach Apprenticeship Program being held in conjunction with the 2011 ISU Grand Prix Final held December 8 -10th in Quebec City. The program provided coaches of competitive athletes the opportunity to observe athletes at the Junior and Senior levels and participate in workshops sessions facilitated by Michelle Leigh, Jennifer Robinson and Ben Ferriera. Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to support Neal and Kevin through Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Professional Coach Development Bursaries.

Skate Canada technical update

The free program requirements for STARSkate tests have been revised effective July 1, 2011. These changes were made to reflect the well balanced program criteria for competition. An overview of the changes is posted in Members Only under . Revised test sheets will be available online and for order in mid-June. No changes have been made to the elements part (Part 1) of the free skate tests.
The STARSkate well balanced free program requirements for singles and pairs have been updated to reflect the changes to the CompetitiveSkate program criteria. These changes will ensure consistency and allow for easy transition between the two streams. The 2011-2012 STARSkate Pre-Event Technical Package will be available in July and will contain all information related to STARSkate competition categories. An abbreviated version is now posted in Members Only under .

The 2011 Skate Canada NL AGM and Coach Development Weekend took place May 6th – 8th, 2011 at the Capital Hotel in St. John’s. At Saturday’s banquet the following award winners were announced:-
Skate Canada Volunteer Award of Excellence: Christine Morgan, Prince of Wales
Skate Canada Section Volunteer Award: Sharon Stoodley, Ice Crystal
Skate Canada Program Assistant Award: Katie Stoodley, Ice Crystal
Skate Canada Section Official Award: Mark Scott, Prince of Wales
Skate Canada Section Coach Award: Lindsay Hillier, Mount Pearl SC
BMO Financial Group CanSkater of the Year: Becky Drover, CBN
Skate Canada StarSkate Athlete Award: Bianca Paiement, Prince of Wales
Skate Canada Competitive Skate Athlete Award: Grace Woodland, Mount Pearl
Past winners

Ryan Sutherland and Kaitlin Greening (PreNovice pairs Canadian champions) and Joey Russell (Junior Canadian champion, and senior mens bronze medalist) were announced as the 2011 entries to the Hall of Fame.

Joey Russell, Matthew Young ,Alexandra Young, Robyn Lynn McGrath and Matthew Power were recipients of athlete assistance fund bursaries.

On Friday the 2011-12 board was elected. Changes include Bev Power as Section Chair with Juliet O’Brien moving to past chair, Christine Morgan (Competitions Chair), Gail Hopkins (Treasurer), and Tanya Young (Data Specialists Chair) (full board). We thank retiring board members Karen Nevin and Sherri Mercer for their service.

Learn To Compete Youth Camp

Following the direction of Skate Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model, the Section this year replaced Preliminary competition at Sectionals with a Learn to Compete Youth Camp. This was well attended, and a great success. The camp was conducted by Marijane Stong with assistance from our own skaters, coaches and officials. The camp combined on and off ice sessions, and being held in conjunction with Sectionals allowed these up and coming skaters to experience the highest level of competition in Newfoundland and Labrador. Fred Robertson has kindly provided us with some great pictures.

Skate Canada technical update

Please note that important regulation changes were approved on October 2, 2010 by the Skate Canada Board of Directors. these include clarifications for some STARskate tests and Juvenile dance, and changes to the well-balanced program for Novice. For full details please go to Members Only – Rules/Regulation Changes October 2010. There are also some Cumulative Points Calculation (CPC) Judging System Clarifications under Technical and Programs. Further technical updates were added on October 21, relating to synchro and other matters.

Technical update

Skate Canada have announced updates on technical information on the Members Only web site. These include revised versions of the 2010-2011 STARSkate Pre-Event Technical Package, the 2010-2011 Adult Pre-Event Technical Package, the 2010-2011 Pair Pre-Event Technical Package and an alternate version of the Synchro Technical Requirements Package. Also, please see the revised Technical Q & A, and revised test sheets. Skaters, coaches and offcials should ensure they are using the current versions of these documents.

Canada Games coaching staff announced

Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to announce the coaching staff for figure skating at the Canada Winter Games. Wendy Mercer has been appointed as the female coach, Lisa Young as the Special Olympics coach, and Neal Thorne as the male coach. Betty Brett will be the team manager. The games are being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia February 11-27 2011.
