The 2013 Chatman’s Bakery & World’s Finest Chocolate SCNL Provincial Championships were held March 1-3, 2013, at the Clarenville Events Cente, Clarenville, NL, hosted by the  Flying Blades FSC.

2013 SCNL Synchronized Skating Championships

Princettes- Cornel Trophy

The 2013 SCNL Synchronized Skating Championships were held February 15th & 16th, at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay, NL, hosted by the Prince of Wales SC.  Thirty four teams were entered in nine categories.

Awards

The Cornel Trophy was awarded to:
Princettes – Prince of Wales SC
(This trophy goes to the team that in the opinion of the judges was the best team in the competition. Unison and Presentation, in relation to the music, age and ability of the skaters, and the program as a whole should all be considered.)

The Butt Trophy was awarded to:
Synergy – Prince of Wales SC
(This trophy is voted on by the participating teams is awarded the team that best demonstrated the qualities of demonstrated good sportsmanship, spirit of fair play, cooperation and friendship.)

2012 Awards

The award winners

Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador held a very successful Annual General Meeting and Awards Banquet this Friday and Saturday at the Battery Hotel, St. John’s. The event was attended by over 100 delegates representing most of the clubs in the province.
At the Awards Banquet, Joyce Martin-Stuckless of Island Blades Figure Skating Club in Twillingate was named Skate Canada Section Volunteer of the year. She will travel to Vancouver next month to be presented with the award at the Skate Canada National Annual General Meeting.
The athlete awards went to Grace Woodland of Mount Pearl SC (Competitive athlete of the year); Alanna Taplin-Jenkins of Bell Island SC (STARSkater of the year), and Sophie Bennett of Prince of Wales Skating Club, St. John’s (Canskater of the year). The volunteer awards went to Katie Blagdon of Flying Blades SC, Clarenville (Coach), Dave Dove of Twillingate (Officials) and Brianna Mercer of Silver Blades SC/ Trinity Placentia SC (Program Assistant).

Athletes Assistance fund bursaries were presented to Matthew Power and Robyn-Lynn McGrath.

2012 Lamontagne Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Championships

The 2012 Lamontagne Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Championships were held March 02-04, 2012 at Joe Byrne Memorial Arena, Grand Falls-Windsor, NL hosted by Sparkling Blades SC.

2012 SCNL Provincial Synchronized Skating Championships

Starlites Open

Twenty-eight teams were in Corner Brook this weekend competing in the 2012 Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Synchronized Skating Championships. This represented the largest entry since 2006, and involved over 400 skaters from across the province ranging in age from six years to adult.
The Cornel Trophy was awarded to TP Explosions (this trophy goes to the team that in the opinion of the judges was the best team in the competition, taking into consideration the age of the skaters).
The Butt Trophy went to theTP Flames. This trophy is voted on by the participating teams is awarded the team that best demonstrated the qualities of demonstrated good sportsmanship, spirit of fair play, cooperation and friendship.
The quality of skating was shown by five teams setting provincial records – the TP Explosions in Pre-Novice, the Princettes in Juvenile, Krystal Blades in Elementary, Lollipops (Prince of Wales SC) in Beginner 1; and the Krystal Coasters of Crystal Gliders SC in Beginner II.

2012 Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Sectional Championships

Bethany Whelan is presented with Sectional Merit award

The 2012 Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Sectional Championships were held Friday,  November 11 & Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Jack Byrne Memorial Arena, Torbay, NL.
Bethany Whelan of Silver Blades won the Sectional Merit Award for most outstanding performance, and Sophia Burke of Mount Pearl won the Polaris Artistic Cup (previous winners)

In addition at the banquet, Ryan Sutherland and Kaitlyn Greening were inducted into the Hall of Fame, recognizing their achievement in being the first skaters representing the section to attain a national championship

Skate Lab

This year’s Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Sectionals featured SKATE LAB. SKATE LAB is an innovative developmental program specifically designed for competitive skaters aged 9 and under who intend to compete in Preliminary level events in the upcoming skating year. Through knowledge based seminars and training sessions, parents and skaters experienced the world of a competitive skater in a fun and interactive way.
On Saturday of Sectionals there was a seminar for our up and coming male skaters with 20 boys from all over the province taking part. Both Skate Lab and the boys seminar befitted from the energetic coaching of John Mattatal, Canadian pairs medalist, who provided his services for the weekend.

Skate Canada’s Annual Convention and General Meeting (ACGM) took place over the weekend in Charlottetown, P.E.I., with Skate Canada members from all 13 sections being honoured at the annual awards gala on Friday, May 27. Christine Morgan, of Prince of Wales SC, was the award winner from our section and was presented with her award by Cynthia Phaneuf at the awards banquet.

The 2011 Skate Canada NL AGM and Coach Development Weekend took place May 6th – 8th, 2011 at the Capital Hotel in St. John’s. At Saturday’s banquet the following award winners were announced:-

Past winners

Ryan Sutherland and Kaitlin Greening (PreNovice pairs Canadian champions) and Joey Russell (Junior Canadian champion, and senior mens bronze medalist) were announced as the 2011 entries to the Hall of Fame.

Joey Russell, Matthew Young ,Alexandra Young, Robyn Lynn McGrath and Matthew Power were recipients of athlete assistance fund bursaries.

On Friday the 2011-12 board was elected. Changes include Bev Power as Section Chair with Juliet O’Brien moving to past chair, Christine Morgan (Competitions Chair), Gail Hopkins (Treasurer), and Tanya Young (Data Specialists Chair) (full board). We thank retiring board members Karen Nevin and Sherri Mercer for their service.

Synergy- Cornel Trophy winners

The 2011 Atlantic Regional Synchronized Skating Championships took place today January 29, 2011 at The Glacier, Mount Pearl, NL. Synergy (Intermediate, Prince of Wales SC) won the Cornel Trophy (awarded to the team, who in the opinion of the judges was the best team in the competition), and the Trinity Placentia Flames (Juvenile) were voted the most spirited team and winner of the Butt trophy (previous winners)

Joey Russell wins bronze at Canadians

Joey Russell - bronze at Canadians

Joey Russell won the Section’s first ever senior medal, a bronze in Senior mens at the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships. He skated a superb long programme with two triple-triple combinations to score 134.61, and 204.02 overall – a personal best. He earlier skated an excellent short programme and was in 3rd going into the long. After the event, he was named to the Skate Canada team to compete at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Tokyo and was also assigned to compete at the ISU Four Continents competition. The ISU Four Continents championship is set for Taipei, Taiwan Feb. 15-20, and the world championship is March 21-27 in Tokyo. NTV featured Joey on the news following the event and CBC interviewed Polaris members following the event.

Alexandra and Matthew Young finished 9th in Junior pairs at the BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals in Victoria. They had an excellent skate in their free programme to score 67.02 (103.45 overall). They scored 36.43  to place 10th after the short programme.

Erin Bonisteel- most artistic award

2011 Eastern Regionals were held on Saturday and Sunday, January 8-9, 2011 in Marystown hosted by Ice Crystal FSC.
The most Most Artistic Skater   award went to Senior Bronze skater Erin Bonisteel of Trinity-Placentia FSC. The Hart Award (presented to the skater who puts his/her heart and soul into his/her performance) went to McKenna Mercer, Conception Bay North FSC. The Most Improved Club and Most points awards were captured by Ice Crystal FSC.
