Skate Canada Technical Update

Competitive Technical Update
- There is an update to the 2012-2013 Competitive Well Balanced Program. The Pre-Novice Pair short program has been corrected to state that there is the option of performing a “spiral figure or any death spiral”. It is posted on the Members Only section of the Skate Canada website under Technical and Programs > CompetitiveSkate.
- Well Balanced Program verification documents for free programs have been posted on the Members Only section of the Skate Canada website under Technical and Programs > CompetitiveSkate. These documents detail the process that takes place in the validation of each element in a free program.
STARSkate Technical Update
- The Pre-Preliminary, Preliminary and Junior Bronze Free Skate Well Balanced Program requirements have been revised for the 2012-2013 season. An overview of these changes along with the rational is posted on the Members Only section of the Skate Canada website under Technical and Programs > STARSkate.

The award winners

Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador held a very successful Annual General Meeting and Awards Banquet this Friday and Saturday at the Battery Hotel, St. John’s. The event was attended by over 100 delegates representing most of the clubs in the province.
At the Awards Banquet, Joyce Martin-Stuckless of Island Blades Figure Skating Club in Twillingate was named Skate Canada Section Volunteer of the year. She will travel to Vancouver next month to be presented with the award at the Skate Canada National Annual General Meeting.
The athlete awards went to Grace Woodland of Mount Pearl SC (Competitive athlete of the year); Alanna Taplin-Jenkins of Bell Island SC (STARSkater of the year), and Sophie Bennett of Prince of Wales Skating Club, St. John’s (Canskater of the year). The volunteer awards went to Katie Blagdon of Flying Blades SC, Clarenville (Coach), Dave Dove of Twillingate (Officials) and Brianna Mercer of Silver Blades SC/ Trinity Placentia SC (Program Assistant).

Athletes Assistance fund bursaries were presented to Matthew Power and Robyn-Lynn McGrath.

2012-13 Competitions

At the Skate Canada NL AGM and Coaching Conference the report of the competition re-structuring committee was approved, with three divisional events replacing the five regonal competitions. Confirmed venues for 2012-13 include the Sectional Championships, November 9 and 10 in Mount Pearl; the Eastern Divisional Championships, January 19-20 in Mount Pearl, and the Provincial Championships, March 1-3 in Clarenville. The Western Divisionals will take place January 26 and 27, and the Labrador Divisionals January 19, venues to be determined. Prince of Wales SC will host Provincial synchro in Torbay, dates to be confirmed.

Would you like to become a Technical Specialist?

Seminars have been approved by Skate Canada and scheduled in June/July in Western Ontario (TBD), New Brunswick/PEI (Moncton) and Quebec (Montreal).
Those who would like to be trained must have a skating background. It is recommended, but not required, that candidates have experience as a former skater, coach, or judge at the Challenge level.
If you are interested in this training, please contact the section office as soon as possible.
