The Deer Lake Skating Club Shamrock Challenge Interclub event was held March 5-6, 2010 at the
Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex, Deer Lake. The new “Most Spirited Club Award” went to Stephenville Skating Club. Deer Lake has donated this new trophy to the Western Interclub event; its winner is decided by the judges. They base their decision on which club shows the best spirit throughout the event.

 NL synchro returns to Nationals
Synergy, Prince of Wales Skating Club’s intermediate synchro team competed at the 2010 BMO Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships. They were the first team from Newfoundland and Labrador to skate at nationals since 2003. They had two good skates, scoring 39.19 in their first skate and 45.28 In their second for a total of 64.88.
The 2009-10 team members are Allie Winter, Jennifer Noel, Beth Liverman, Megan Burt, Siobhan Wilkins, Hayley Porter, Jenna Hillyard, Clara Pollard, Nicole Burt, Kayla Kennedy, Samantha Phelan, Lana McCaw, Valerie Ball, Stephanie Nevin, Tiffany Whynot and Carly Austin.

 Thistle Shield presented to Prince of Wales by Andrea Thistle (Agnes' grand-daughter)
The 2010 SCNL Junior Provincials were held February 27 & 28, 2010 in Clarenville, hosted by the Flying Blades FSC.

 TP Explosion- Cornel Trophy
The Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Synchronized Skating Championships hosted by Mount Pearl Skating Club. Teams was a great success, with 24 teams from all over the province competing. The Cornel Trophy (best team) was awarded to the TP Explosions (Trinity Placentia FSC), and the Butt Trophy (most spirited) was awarded to Les Etoiles from CPG Saint Pierre. The Avalon Region is offering an Easter Seminar at the Smallwood Arena in Mt. Pearl (April 6-8). The head coach for this seminar will be Michelle Leigh, who coaches at the Mariposa Training Centre. This year Michelle will be accompanied by Paige Aistrop and Joey Russell.

At the 2010 Lamontagne Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Provincials the Chapman Shield (most points) was awarded to Mount Pearl, and the Alan Davison award (most improved) jointly to Seaport Skaters and Terra Nova Tornadoes.
The Balish Cup (most artistic) went to Victoria Hanlon (Silver Jets) and the Withers Award (outstanding performance) to Emily Benson (Wabush). The Polaris ice dance award went to Andrea White and Tyler Paul of Snowflake. Full results and photos follow.

The election of Officers to Skate Canada Newfoundland & Labrador’s Board of Directors will take place at the Annual General Meeting of the Section
The following positions will be voted on for the term 2010-2012: 2nd Vice-Chairperson; Secretary; Directors at Large (3 positions). In accordance with Rule 1503(7) (f) all nominations must be received by the Chairman of the Nominating Committee on or before Thursday, March 18, 2010.

 Starlites- golden at Atlantics
Congratulations to the Juvenile Starlites (Mount Pearl SC) who won their category at the Atlantic Regional Synchronized Skating Championships, beating 5 other teams for the gold. Their score of 22.22 is a provincial record. The Starlites are Jennifer Bent, Shawna Brodhagen, Kayla Burden, Lauren Coombs, Megan Coombs, Kirklyn Edison, Kelsey Hynes, Emily McIlroy, Krysta Quinn, Briet Sevard, Renee Skinner, Makenzie Woodford, and Grace Woodland (Coach Kevin Walsh). Synergy (Prince of Wales SC) had a good skate as single entrants in Intermediate, scoring 67.53. Synergy have qualified for Nationals in Brampton Ontario in March. Results
Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to announce the coaching staff for figure skating at the Canada Winter Games. Wendy Mercer has been appointed as the female coach, Lisa Young as the Special Olympics coach, and Neal Thorne as the male coach. Betty Brett will be the team manager. The games are being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia February 11-27 2011.
Joey Russell competed in the ISU Four Continents competition in Korea, finishing 11th overall in a strong international field. This international event features skaters from the Americas, Asia, Australasia and Africa. Joey placed 12th in the short programme, scoring 57.05, and 10th in the free skate (114.39) with a total of 171.44. Congratulations to former section member Allie Hann-McCurdy and her partner Michael Coreno on their silver medal in ice-dance. Allie was a Canskater with Prince of Wales SC before moving to BC.
