The Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Synchronized Skating Championships will take place Feb 19 -20, 2010, Mount Pearl Glacier, hosted by Mount Pearl Skating Club. Official Team Practices (by category) will take place 1:00 – 5:00 PM on Friday, Feb. 19th, with the exception of Adult categories, being held Saturday before competition begins. Competition will take place 10:00 – 4:00 PM on Saturday, Feb. 20th with on-ice Medal & Closing Ceremonies to immediately follow. A more detailed schedule will be available shortly.
NOTE: Judges and Technical Panel will be opposite the seating side of The Glacier. On & Off Ice for teams will be on seating side.

The 2010 Lamontagne Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Provincials will be held February 12-14, 2010 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at the Gander Community Center, Gander, NL.

Due to scheduling conflicts and the length of the competition, the host committee regrets to inform skaters, parents, coaches, judges and officials that the banquet scheduled for Saturday evening February 13 has been cancelled. Club refund cheques will be issued and available for pick-up at the registration desk in the Hall of Fame room at the Gander Community Center. Please send a representative from your club to pick up your club cheque.

 Starlites- golden at Atlantics
Congratulations to the Juvenile Starlites (Mount Pearl SC) who won their category at the Atlantic Regional Synchronized Skating Championships, beating 5 other teams for the gold. Their score of 22.22 is a provincial record. The Starlites are Jennifer Bent, Shawna Brodhagen, Kayla Burden, Lauren Coombs, Megan Coombs, Kirklyn Edison, Kelsey Hynes, Emily McIlroy, Krysta Quinn, Briet Sevard, Renee Skinner, Makenzie Woodford, and Grace Woodland (Coach Kevin Walsh). Synergy (Prince of Wales SC) had a good skate as single entrants in Intermediate, scoring 67.53. Synergy have qualified for Nationals in Brampton Ontario in March. Synergy are Allie Winter, Jennifer Noel, Beth Liverman, Megan Burt, Siobhan Wilkins, Hayley Porter, Jenna Hillyard, Clara Pollard, Nicole Burt, Kayla Kennedy, Samantha Phelan, Lana McCaw, Valerie Ball, Stephanie Nevin, Tiffany Whynot and Carly Austin (coach Shirley Thistle).
Allison Drover (Technical Specialist), Suzanne Goodland (Judge) and Angela Clarke (Judge) officiated at the event.
Results
Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to announce the coaching staff for figure skating at the Canada Winter Games. Wendy Mercer has been appointed as the female coach, Lisa Young as the Special Olympics coach, and Neal Thorne as the male coach. Betty Brett will be the team manager. The games are being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia February 11-27 2011.
Joey Russell competed in the ISU Four Continents competition in Korea, finishing 11th overall in a strong international field. This international event features skaters from the Americas, Asia, Australasia and Africa. Joey placed 12th in the short programme, scoring 57.05, and 10th in the free skate (114.39) with a total of 171.44. Congratulations to former section member Allie Hann-McCurdy and her partner Michael Coreno on their silver medal in ice-dance. Allie was a Canskater with Prince of Wales SC before moving to BC.

The Avalon Region is offering an Easter Seminar at the Smallwood Arena in Mt. Pearl (April 6-8). The head coach for this seminar will be Michelle Leigh, who coaches at the Mariposa Training Centre. This year Michelle will be accompanied by Paige Aistrop and Joey Russell.

The Western Regional Skating competition took place this weekend (January 22 – 23, 2010), hosted by Silver Blades Skating Club at the Pepsi Centre, Corner Brook. Silver Blades won the Club Award, the Joan Targett Award went to Marta Croll-Baehre and the Andy Joy Cup to Jasmine Penney

Eastern Regionals took place in Clarenville this weekend (January 23-24), hosted by Flying Blades. Brianna Seaward was named most artistic skater, with the Hart award going to Katie Cranford. Most points went to CBN, with Cutting Edge the most improved club.

 Alex and Matthew skate at Junior Nationals (Skate Canada photo)
At the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in London Ontario. Skate Newfoundland and Labrador was represented by Joey Russell in Senior Men. Joey skated a brilliant short programme on Friday scoring 74.04 to place 3rd, landing a clean triple axel. He placed 5th overall after scoring 128.12 in the long for a provincial record total of 202.16.
At the BMO Junior Nationals Alex and Matthew Young won silver in novice pairs with a personal best score of 63.92 in the long programme (102.68 overall, only just short of the winner’s score of 102.87). They were in first place after the short programme with a score of 38.76. Alex and Matthew’s long programme can now be seen on Skatebuzz TV!

Central Regionals were held in Botwood, hosted by Seaport Skaters FSC. Cecily Parsons of Terra Nova Tornadoes won the most artistic award, with Sparkling Blades capturing the most points trophy, and Island Blades the most improved club award.
